Hi!

I had another fun, eventful day! It all started with my new heaven…Manna Bread. Date Cinnamon Manna Bread, to be exact. Chewy, moist, dense deliciousness. Go get some (Whole Foods frozen bread section)! I topped it with some coconut oil.

Harvey and I had a date with the vet this morning for a checkup on his ears. They’re looking good and Harvey seems much better. For such a tiny cat (4.5 pounds), he sure can stretch out!

There will be a lot about Harvey’s diet coming up on Greens for Good soon. We’re changing things up for him so that he’s eating as close to a raw meat diet as he would get in the wild as possible. I’m extremely excited about it and can’t wait to share the details with you soon.

Around lunchtime I had a date with Caitlin! Her Chevy Traverse adventures called for a girlfriend shopping trip and I was more than happy to tag along. We started with lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. There are actually quite a few items on the menu that have easy switches to make the dishes vegan. I love going to CF for that reason alone. The vegan options are extremely TASTY too! Today I got the Thai Lettuce Wrap appetizer and substituted avocado for the chicken. Isn’t it a beautiful dish?

DSC_5321

Caitlin and I did lots of chatting about girl things, then proceeded to do a little shopping in two of my most favorite stores on the planet: Crate and Barrel & Anthropologie.

DSC_5322

Hello new Green Monster / Cherry Chocolate Bomb Shake (CCBS) glass. I’ve been looking everywhere for something as large as you are (22 oz)!

DSC_5331

Oh and a beautiful GREEN placemat to go with? Yes, please ;-)

DSC_5334

Thank you, Caitlin, for these lovely gifts…you’re a great friend!

I also picked up more glass storage containers for Evan’s lunches and a narrow spatula for the Vita-Mix.

IMG00036-20100303-2228

Anthropologie was another great success. I headed straight for the sales racks to see if anything caught my eye. Usually a sale item at Anthro means it’s still $50-$100. Not today! I got this lovely shirt for $19 (down from $88).

DSC_5351

And this dress for $39 (marked down from $168!). Caitlin originally picked it out, but it was too big on her. She made encouraged me to try it on and it fit like a glove! I couldn’t pass up a perfect fitting, cute dress for such a steal. Plus I have a summer wedding I needed a dress for, and I can dress this one up or down depending on other occasions as well.

DSC_5348

When I got home, I started to get hungry again, so I had a macaroon (a little dry from the coconut flour, but still good)…

DSC_5353

And a CCBS (wish it had spinach but we’re out) in my new glass!

DSC_5379

DSC_5393

Then I listened to an online synchronous lecture for school and filled up the new half-gallon (!!) mason jars and consolidated the smaller jars. Every single one is full of something and all of our bulk items now have a home!

DSC_5401

I love mason jars because they help you see just how much food you have, which is extremely helpful in meal planning. We look a bit like we’re running a bulk food store!

DSC_5399

I’m not too hungry for dinner yet but I might eat something small later on. Edited to add: I had a non-dairy burrito.

Do you love bulk foods? Are you a mason jar fan like me? Love ‘em!

Have a great night!

I like your idea of the mason jars. I’ve been to the bulk barn a few times this year. Mainly for dried beans to help cut out the salt from canned ones.

My hope for my new kitchen in June is to have a huge selection of containers of bulk items like this. I need to get me some mason jars, it looks like!

I love finding good sales at Anthropologie. Their clothes are so pretty but I can’t afford them!

Mason jars all the way! I have all sizes and it’s amazing how many I keep buying to add to the stash! I’ve been looking for a long spatula for the vita and now I know where to find one. Thanks!

That dress is adorable — what a score! I really would love to get some stainless steel or glass straws for my iced lattes…

Mine are the 12mm Beautiful Bend straws from Glass Dharma. I just added them to my store for easier reference!

I use mason jars too for my bulk ingredients! Love ‘em! The only thing I am still working out is fitting them all into my cupboards, right now they have smaller stuff like spices sitting in front of them which often end up obscuring the contents of the jars. Yours look so much niceer than mine though since they are all the same size. Mine are a bit of a hodge podge of sizes and lids etc.
That smoothie looks delish! I need to get some cherries so I can give it a go.

We have all different sizes too, those just happened to be the set of half-gallons I got earlier in the week. The more diverse mason jars, the merrier!

Ohhh I love your mason jars! That looks so beautiful AND it’s functional. That is definitely something I want to do when I have more space and more bulk items to fill the jars with :)
That dress is so pretty! It reminds me that I have a wedding in August that I just have to buy a dress for…darn! ;)

I love the lettuce wraps at CF!!! They are colorful, flavorful, and perfect for a meal. That dress from antrhopologie is adorable. I can never find a steal like that. And yes, I am a major bulk food junkie. I bought a whole ton of OXO (probably way more expensive than mason jars) BPA free containers and filled them all up. It is so organized and you can see everything you have. I love it.

hey ryan! I just found your blog a few weeks ago and I love it! I have a question for you. I’ve been a vegetarian for several years now and I love it. In my daily life I follow a mostly vegan diet because my system goes wacky when I have dairy. Still, I indulge in a bit of cheese or greek yogurt on occassion. So, my question is…what was the biggest difference you noticed when you went vegan? Did you feel markedly better? I guess I’m just debating the pro’s and con’s of veganism and I’m looking for another perspective. Thanks.

[Reply]

Ryan @ Greens for Good Reply:

YES, I feel SO much better. Before I went vegan I felt like my stomach was in pain and I had terribly violent stomach aches any time I ate dinner out or had a rich meal. The crazy thing is, I thought it was normal until I began to wonder if I had IBS or something. As soon as I changed my diet, it all went away and I can now eat without fear of running to the bathroom right after dinner. Email me if you have further Q’s (use the contact form).

I love bulk foods! I use mason jars too – they’re the perfect size, reusable, and if need be, even freezable! Todd and I like to make homemade pickles and salsa and a few other things, so we usually have lots of jars around!

Hi Ryan! I just started reading G4G a couple weeks ago and I’m loving it! What took me so long?

I’m mason jar obsessed as well- hell, I just love all clear food containers- I am obsessed withtThe Container Store. I can’t wait to outfit my kitchen with jars up the wazoo once I have my own place (I’m a college student). There is just something so satisfying about their heft and their shininess.

I used Mason jars as vases for centerpieces at my wedding, and now a lot of those jars have been turned into storage. I love it! So cute and functional.

You totally lucked out finding those steals at anthro. Whenever I go the sale items are still high – it’s annoying.

Yes, I love bulk items. I could live in the bulk aisle! You’re mason jars are pretty! My jars don’t exactly match up – I use old pasta, better n pb, and jam jars. :)
