Happy Friday Afternoon!
I don’t have any pictures for you today (mostly because I left my camera at home), but I don’t really think my fitness update needs any pictures. So let’s just talk, shall we?
It’s been over a month since the car accident and I’ve spent that month laying low, stretching like my doctor told me to, and resting like my doctor told me to. I’ve spent more time having my body worked on by other people in the last month than I would ever devote to exercise in a week. I’m proud of myself for making it a priority and stepping back from yoga, swimming, running, etc… as hard as that was. I’m trying to take care of myself, get better and most importantly, move on.
Today marked the last day of going to the doctor so much. I’m getting better and only have to go once per week now. Hooray, progress! I had a feeling I would get that news today, since I’ve been able to get back into a fitness routine this week without feeling like I’ve been run over by a truck (bad analogy?). I was able to do yoga twice with some amazing friends, run/walk a short distance with Caitlin, stretch out with a nice swim, and hop on the elliptical once.
I can’t tell you how great it felt to finally be able to do all of that again. And with my friends, too! All of my friends here in Orlando are very active people and it’s been tough to sit back and wait for my body’s green light to workout. Not to say it hasn’t come along with a lot of soreness and some pain, it has, but ultimately my doctor doesn’t want me to be sedentary, and I don’t want to be either. So I’m going to keep pushing forward slowly, while listening to my body’s warning signs to slow down (I got one this morning) and see what happens.
Have you ever been in a car accident? What were the implications on your level of physical activity? All of mine basically came to a halt. I tried to do yoga two weeks after and my back said NO WAY, so I waited longer. It’s all about balance and trying to accept the cards that have been dealt to you while honoring your body’s ever-changing needs. It’s been really difficult, but there is always progress to be made!

So glad to hear things are going well for you and that you are able to get back in your fitness routine. Those Orlando girls are very active
I have been in a few car accidents, luckily none that were to bad, though it did take a mental toll on me. Having a good support group is key, yoga helps too with the mental side.

Good on you for listening to your body. There are times when we really have to surrender to that and if we don’t, then it can cause more damage than good.

Yay, thanks for the update, Ryan. It has to be very hard to be sidelined by something so out of your control. I’m really happy that you’ve been able to take it in stride and do what’s ultimately best for you!

I’m so so glad you are feeling better and I can for sure relate to you> i wasn’t in a car accident but I have an injury and I can’t run or exercise period anytime in the near future. It’s HARD! Going from being active to being… not, is tough. I really admire you for listening to your body totally and completely. And now you are rewarded by being able to get back into what you love. Thank for this post, those words are exactly what I needed to hear (read haha).

Yea I had a car accident while I was training for my first triathlon. Took the chiropractor 3 months to get everything straightened back out. of course then I was able to get back on the horse and pulled out a great tri. stick with it, you’ll be putting in more miles soon.

I think it’s awesome that you were able to listen to you body and take doing physical activity slowly. Your body will definitely thank you!
I’ve never been in a car accident, but I did have a fall that led to a bone bruise on my knee. I had to take almost a year off of running and I still don’t feel as though it’s completely healed. I agree, having active friends and having to sit back and watch is no fun!

I was involved in a car accident years ago and it took quite awhile for my neck to be “right” again – a year or so if I remember right. I gradually got it back to pre-accident movement and was totally pain free. Getting back was definitely a series of baby steps. THANK YOU for posting a link to a spiralizer! I have looked high and low for one, and even searched Amazon with no success (wrong search words I guess!). I clicked your link and ordered it IMMEDIATELY!

I’ve never been in a car accident, only a fender bender, but it always scares me so much. I’m glad to hear you are feeling better. I found your blog from Caitlin and am wanting to train for a tri soon. I’ve got the biking down, working on the running and need to start swimming! I look forward to reading
